Orleans County Man Accused of Faking Theft of Rig
Crime, News

An Orleans County man accused of arranging the theft of his tractor-trailer is facing felony charges.

Matthew R. Tower, 32, of Gaines was recently charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, following a lengthy investigation by the Orleans County Sheriff's Office, Orleans County Sheriff Scott Hess announced. Tower is accused of conspiring with two men and arranging for the duo to steal his 14-year-old tractor-trailer in March, so he could collect insurance money on the rig, Hess said.

The truck, which is worth approximately $70,000, was stolen from 15731 Route 31 in Murray on or about March 31, deputies said.

The plan was for one of the two men to drive the tractor-trailer to North Carolina to dispose of the truck, deputies said.

But police said that did not happen. One of the men was driving the rig on May 20, when he was stopped by police in Wilson County, North Carolina, Hess said.

The truck was impounded and authorities in North Carolina notified the Orleans County Sheriff's Office of the incident.

The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle filed this report.
