Canal Village Farmers' Market opens in Downtown Medina

MEDINA – There’s a new farmers’ market in the heart of some of the richest farm land in Western New York. The Canal Village Farmers’ Market opened for business in Medina on July 11 and so far has been very well received.

The market is located in a parking lot owned by the Orleans Renaissance Group of Medina at the corner of West Center Street and West Avenue, in the heart of Medina’s historic downtown. The busy spot will be open every Saturday morning at 8:00AM until 1:00PM, through the month of October.

Chris Busch, President of the Orleans Renaissance Group said the organization felt that sponsoring a market was a good fit for an “arts and culture” organization like ORG.

“Agriculture is the number one industry in Orleans County and is very much a part of our culture,” said Busch. “Its one of the many reasons why people love living here– the availability of farm-fresh produce at your fingertips. ORG is very excited to be a part of this for the community.”

Gail Miller is the manager of the market, which has about 10 vendors and is growing, including fruit and vegetable farms, meat producers, honey, baked goods, tea, and art from the Medina’s Wide Angle Art Gallery. On some Saturdays, the market will feature live music.

Miller said so far, the response has been excellent.

“We’re very happy. Our goal was to represent local farmers and provide a wide variety of products and so far, we’ve done that very well.”

Some vendors will be participating weekly, others rotate monthly or on an irregular basis, but each week will have a full slate of participating vendors and a wide variety of products.

The market had a late start this season, beginning the second week of July. Next year, Miller hopes to have additional vendors on board.

“We had a late start this season and some vendors who would’ve liked to participate had already committed to other markets. Next year, we hope to have them on board,” said Miller.

“We receive calls every week and we’re still accepting applications from interested vendors. We’ll continue to do so to improve the mix, provide variety and a great market experience.”

Miller said many folks are following the market weekly on Facebook at Canal Village Farmers' Market. "There are updates and new information posted almost daily about upcoming market events, vendors and food news."

Vendor inquiries or general questions about the market can be directed to market manager, Gail Miller via email at canalvillagemarket@gmail.com or by phone at 585-798-3904, or via mail at PO Box 543, Medina, NY 14103

Some of the current vendors include Roberts Farms, Stymus Farms, Panek Farms, SK Herefords Beef Farm, Renko Meat, FlowerFieldsForever, Wide Angle Art Gallery, Shirt Factory Café Coffee & Baked Goods, English Rose Tea Shoppe and Sunrise Bees Apiary.
