ALBION — When 15-year-old Katherine Sanchez disappeared Jan. 14 after a night of babysitting at her sister's house, she left behind her warm coat and her phone.

Family members knew Katherine wouldn't go anywhere without both.

"The police, they just thought she ran away with a boy," said Aster Martinez of Albion, Katherine Sanchez's aunt. "But her mother always suspected something was wrong. She didn't understand how she could leave those things behind. It didn't fit the puzzle."

Late Friday, village of Albion police recovered Katherine's body in a shallow grave in an apple orchard and charged her brother-in-law, 21-year-old Carlos Cardenas of Albion, with second-degree murder in connection with her death.
