The First sign of Spring: Witch Hazel

By Chris Busch, Medina, NY

So, what’s the first sign of spring?

Is it the first sight of robin red-breast?... The first crocus pushing up through the earth?... Perhaps the ever-popular bright yellow blossom of the forsythia?...

The answer is– none of the above... it is the fringe-like petals of the Hamamelis– the Witch Hazel!

New Farmers’ Market Coming to West Seneca in May 2014

West Seneca officials gave approval Monday for a new farmers’ market that would open in May 2014 in the center of town.

The upscale open-air farmers’ market and marketplace on the grassy hill at Main Street and Union Road, in front of Town Hall and within walking distance of several neighborhoods, was proposed by West Seneca native Joe Kirchmyer. Kirchmyer is also involved with marketing efforts for the popular Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market in Buffalo and the Winter Market at Horsefeathers on Buffalo’s West Side.

Peace Corps Adventure Leads Former Volunteers to the WNY Land Conservancy

To say that the newest additions to the staff at the Western New York Land Conservancy — Jajean Rose-Burney and his wife Ana Hernández Balzac — have interesting resumes would be a dramatic understatement. While volunteers in the Peace Corps, Jajean and Ana spent 27 months in Puebla, Mexico, successfully tackling problems that often seemed insurmountable.

Among other things, Jajean helped protect a globally important wetland twice the size of the city of Buffalo from rapid and unplanned urban development, while Ana enabled nearly 100 schools throughout the state of Puebla to become certified “Green Schools.”
