President Lincoln visits Bent's Opera House in Medina

Re-enactors flood the historic village for the third annual Civil War Encampment at Genesee Community College.

MEDINA, NY- Bent’s Opera House was built during the Lincoln presidency at the height of the Civil War.  The venerable president never visited the Medina opera house as his life was cut short by an assassins bullet in April 1865.

However, these photographs taken Saturday morning stir the imagination as to what such a visit may have been like had Mr. Lincoln visited the historic canal village.

Re-enactors from the Civil War Encampment at the Genesee Community College's Medina Campus visited Bent’s Saturday morning.  The encampment is part of GCC’s Civil War Initiative which included lectures, exhibits and other activities, marking the 150th anniversary of the U. S. Civil War.

Three days of special activities, scheduled April 25 to 27 included a visit by acclaimed Civil War filmmaker Ron Maxwell along with dozens of other activities.

Saturday morning, the public was invited to “Breakfast with the Generals” as Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and James Longstreet along with Union General Ulysses S. Grant made appearances at local restaurants in downtown Medina's Historic District.

Abraham Lincoln also made an appearance downtown and visited the Civil War Era Bent's Opera House at Main and Center Streets.  The structure is current undergoing a restoration.

Full-scale Civil War battle re-enactments are scheduled for 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at the Medina GCC Campus, located at 11470 Maple Ridge Road in Medina.

Medina is located at the intersection of NYS Routes 31 & 63 in Orleans County.  Visitors travelling the Truway should take Exit 48A in Pembroke and drive north on NYS Route 77/63 fifteen miles to Medina.

The trip to Medina from either Rochester or Buffalo is a 45 minute drive, 30 minutes from the Exit 49 in Depew or from Brockport, NY.
