Start a Conversation During National Suicide Prevention Week

This week, Sept. 10-16, is National Suicide Prevention Week. For some of us, it’s a time to reflect and mourn those we have lost. And for all of us, it should also be a week filled with starting conversations, taking an active role in suicide prevention, and seeking immediate help for those suffering from depression or carrying the burden of suicidal thoughts.

“Suicidal thoughts and depression can impact anyone of any age, race or gender. It does not discriminate,” said Monica A. Farrar, a licensed mental health counselor and private clinician in Williamsville. “Far too often I meet individuals and families who feel embarrassed or ashamed to openly discuss mental illness and suicide, and that needs to end. Help is available, and it may be a simple conversation that opens the door to treatment and a far better life.”

Teamwork and talent helped former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Andre Reed get into four straight Super Bowls and eventually the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And thanks to the teamwork and talent of a local artist and an artisan print shop, limited-edition Andre Reed prints will be available at the first ever Collectors’ Expo taking place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Buffalo Irish Center. The Irish Center is located at 245 Abbott Road in Buffalo.

Dedication Planned for Daemen Center Named in Honor of Historic Gift

Daemen College will celebrate the grand opening of its newly named Paul A. Saffrin Center for Sustainability and Civic Engagement at a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m. Sept. 7 in Duns Scotus Room 226.

The ceremony, which is a part of Daemen’s inaugural Founders Celebration, will include the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the naming in honor of an historic $1 million gift from the Paul A. Saffrin Foundation. Remarks will be given by Daemen President Gary A. Olson, Paul A. Saffrin, and Dr. Maureen Millane, associate vice president for community engagement. A reception will immediately follow the dedication ceremony, which is free and open to the public.

Founders Bell Ringing Ceremony to Kick-Off Daemen Celebration

Daemen College’s inaugural Founders Celebration, a new annual tradition to commemorate the college’s rich history and origins, will kick off with a dedication and ringing ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 7 to officially unveil the institution’s Founders Bell.

In honor of the college’s 70th anniversary being marked this year, the ceremony will include one symbolic ring for each decade since the college was founded in 1947. Official ringers at the ceremony will include Daemen President Gary A. Olson; Dr. Thomas Stewart, ’74, chair of the Daemen Board of Trustees; Sister Edith Wyss, ’66, of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, the college’s founding congregation; Nancy Haberman Gacioch, ’62, alumna; Dr. Matthew Ward, president of the Faculty Senate; Dr. Ned Cuddy, faculty emeriti representative; and Hugo Juarez, president of the Student Association.

As you might imagine, the kitchen at your favorite local restaurant is a very busy, fast-paced environment. In addition to all the food preparation and cooking taking place behind the scenes, there’s a tremendous amount of foot traffic — everyone from chefs to dishwashers and house managers to the waitstaff.

Needless to say, on any given day a restaurant kitchen floor also sees its share of spills and splashes. Food, beverages, water and even cooking oil can end up underneath the feet of restaurant employees at any point in time, increasing the likelihood of slips, falls and injuries to staff.

As a result, slips, trips and falls due to wet and slippery conditions are among the greatest kitchen concerns. For restaurant owners, it’s an ongoing battle to keep workers healthy and safe.

The Rural Outreach Center in East Aurora was the recent recipient of a $1,000 grant from the Junior League of Buffalo for its upgraded “Nutrition ROCs” program.

Daemen Partners With D’Youville on Pharmacy, Dual Degrees

Daemen College and D’Youville College have established a new educational partnership that will give students the opportunity to earn a doctor of pharmacy degree in a shorter amount of time and also provides an option to receive a dual degree. The two agreements were formally signed at D’Youville by Daemen President Gary A. Olson; D’Youville President Lorrie Clemo; Dr. Michael Brogan, Daemen’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college; and Dr. Arup Sen, D’Youville’s vice president for academic affairs. “This newly established partnership between two premier private colleges in Western New York will provide our students with high quality learning and professional opportunities that represent an important step in educational collaborations in the Buffalo Niagara region,” said Olson.
